Having been a Maternity Photographer for over 7 years in the Greater Seattle area, I have learned a great deal about the pregnant form. How it moves, how the body changes, and most importantly, how women feel about their bodies during the 10 short months of their pregnancy. There are many joys and sorrows, risks and rewards that come along with being pregnant. I have heard so many different journeys and stories that have brought me and my clients to tears as we celebrate where they are now. For me, photographing the pregnant form is more than just talking a couple “quick pics” for a session. It is an intimate moment for my clients to tell their story and for many, to see themselves as beautiful for the first time during their pregnancy.
Maternity Photography, and most importantly HOW a photographer approaches a maternity session, is I believe, a delicate moment. I have many women who come through my photography studio doors with hesitations and worries about how their bodies look during their pregnancy. They see themselves has bloated, fat, unattractive etc… They are not use to seeing their body shift and change while they carry this extremely delicate life inside their womb. But for me, I see their body as BEAUTIFUL. And my goal is for them to see that was is taking place is such a miraculous thing and their bodies are a living work of art.
The reason I wrote this Photography Guide on Maternity Photography is to help equip other photographers with HOW you approach your client to gain their trust in photographing the pregnant form. So many women go through their pregnancy choosing not to have their pregnancy documented because of how they feel about their bodies. And it gives me no greater joy than to hear their reactions when my client’s see their photos for the first time and they see for themselves that they are truly BEAUTIFUL.
Maternity photography is more than just taking quick pics in a field of grass… It is about the experience and journey we as professionals create for our clients.
